hiccups

IMG_3101
Last night the strangest thing happened. I'm usually a very good sleeper (something I'm very grateful for) but last night I woke up at 1:45 am and stayed wide away until 5 am. I have no idea why. My eyes were open and I couldn't seem to close them. Then one thing led to another and my brain started working and the wheels started turning and I just couldn't shut down. I started thinking, worrying, fretting. Not about anything in particular or anything very worrisome. Then I got the best little wake up call, the baby got the hiccups! It was the most adorable thing ever and I just lay there with my hand on my belly for what felt like forever as my little babe bounced up and down to a quick little hiccup rhythm. I can't believe it, there is a real human person in there who gets the hiccups. What a thrill.

I'm in my third trimester now, I still feel great and have a surprising amount of energy. My belly is getting rounder by the day and I'm loving every second that I spend admiring my ever changing profile in the mirror. My only complaint is that it's going by too fast. A few months ago when we found out we were expecting all I wanted was for these 9 months to rush by as quickly as possible so I could get to the end of the journey and come out the other side with my fresh little miracle. But now that it's actually happening I'm getting anxious about always looking forward and not taking the time to appreciate what's happening right now. Though I am super excited to meet my little boy or girl (and to stop calling my baby "the baby") my aim is to spend these next couple of months living in the moment and appreciating every little hiccup that baby offers me while he/she is still safe in my belly.

  1. Awww! I loved that bit. I remember one point during the 3rd trimester when my daughter figured out how to tickle me when I did something she didn't like (specifically lying on my left side) I jumped about a foot the first time she did it and my husband got really confused. Now she is six and just loves to hear the story of how she used to tickle me when she was a tiny baby in my tummy.

  2. Funny, I was also awake last night for few hours... Joys of the third trimester! But unlike you, I can't wait for the little guy to show up! Enjoy the last months! Take care.

  3. Wakefulness during the last trimester is pretty much to be expected. Perhaps it is nature's way of getting you ready for the nights ahead and broken sleep. But if it is low blood sugar, which can cause you to waken, try eating a banana. Works like a drug for some reason, at least on non-pregnant people.

  4. My daughter was a huge hiccupper! It was always such a happy relief to feel her gurgling away in there.

  6. Lol I LOATHED when my son got the hiccups. And he got them at least once a day. How funny the different reactions to the same thing.

  7. My first daughter had frequent hiccups in utero. Waking up in the last trimester is practice for when the baby comes.

  8. Hiccups can be a lot of fun. I remember one night in my first pregnancy, I was lying with my belly against my husband's back when the baby got the hiccups at about 3 am. After about a minute of my belly bouncing around, my husband said "yeah, have fun with that" and rolled over and went back to sleep. That didn't seem fair at all ; )
I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes easily. I am 39 weeks with my third and I have to admit, I am done!

  9. Reading this is like reading my journal to my son--he is now 16, yes the time goes incredibly fast and there is no way to make it go slower. Just enjoy!

  10. It's truly the most amazing and unique experience feeling your little one in utero. You're right to enjoy every second and it's so fleeting!!

  11. That is so sweet! I loved when my little guy would hiccup or move around in there. He hiccuped quite a bit in his few months of life as well, but seems to have outgrown it now at 11 months. You're so right to enjoy every minute of it!

  12. Motherhood seems to come with so many forms of insomnia...I hope you're back to a regular sleep schedule tonight! But how neat that your little one was there with you, keeping you company with his/her little hiccups. I miss the feeling of those little hiccups and kicks so much...I also felt like it went by much too quickly. Beautiful words, and beautiful photo of your belly!

  14. I loved my daughter's in utero hiccups, so very sweet. Only hers were more like "hib-BIT".
Haven't thought of that in years; thanks for the reminder.
And may your little one give you all the joy our daughter has given us.

  15. Everything about kids goes by too fast! My son is 17, although it seems like only yesterday that I was sporting the basketball belly :-) I don't remember specifically if he had hiccups, but the toenails! (He was a long skinny baby, and is now a very tall, skinny teen.) Enjoy ... lots of smiles and laughs ahead.

  16. I remember I had that same thing, waking up at 4 or 5 am and couldn't turn off my brain and stop thinking. Also remember right after my baby boy was born and he got the hiccups for the first time, I felt so connected to those hiccups and was like, 'hey, those hiccups should be inside of me!'. He is now 12 weeks and it is the most amazing journey! I miss those little kicks and movements, enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and the nesting. :)

  17. Ah, Motherhood! You are enjoying the unique stage of having a hands-free baby, ultimatly portable, and you still have control of how you spend your time. That's good, because in the meantime your brain is just as busy as your body, getting ready for the best that is yet to come. Enjoy every minute, and best wishes to all three of you!

  19. It's amazing how pregnancy flies by. Your looking gorgeous entering your 3rd trimester :-)

I'm 33 weeks along now and I can totally relate to the sleepless nights. I console myself with the fact that it's getting me use to the sleepless nights I'll be getting once our little one makes her appearance.

I am also very jealous, I don't think I've experience hiccups yet. Usually I get a swift kick/punch to the bladder or ribs.

  20. Isn't it amazing how the little things really make the reality of the baby hit home? I used to love feeling my babies hiccup in my belly - the twins were really odd, as sometimes only half my belly would be jumping, and sometimes both halves would jump to a different rhythm. Enjoy these last few months - the last few months of a first pregnancy are special in a way nothing afterwards is. Though of course every little stage of parenthood is special - and makes you feel that times goes by too fast ;)

  21. What a gorgeous, lovely photo! The hiccups are so adorable, it's amazing how frequently they get them, little hiccupping newborns are pretty cute, too. I'm so happy that you are having a wonderful pregnancy, you look beautiful!

  23. My daughter did tap dancing AND had hiccups. I loved every one of those events and would stop to savour them when they occurred.

I can relate to what you are saying. I had many people do double takes when I was not jumping up and down (figuratively, of course) at the idea of holding my baby in my arms, even as I went pass the expected delivery date. It was a state of mind and body I was very comfortable with.

May the rest of your pregnancy be pleasant!

  24. You are looking so cute!!! One of my fave things was when my wee ones got the hiccups! So fun! or when you see the foot or a limb poke out. Enjoy these moments for you will miss them when they are gone :)

Did you decide what colors you are going for the room with? I can't wait to whip you up a baby gift but think i will wait till I know what you have so I can go gung ho with my gift making :)
